MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 2008
DENVER INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW
Thanks to everyone who helped make the 2008 Denver International Auto Show this past weekend such a big hit. This year's show set records for attendance in many ways starting with on-line ticket sales, which were new this year and made up about 8 percent of total ticket sales.
Sunday's attendance was an all-time record, beating the previous high set in 2002. For more than three hours on Sunday, the line stretched through the lobby of the Colorado Convention Center and outside for more than
1 ½ blocks. Additionally, for more than an hour the line stretched for 2 ½ blocks. Even with the record lines, the wait for the ticket window averaged five minutes or less.
Bill Maffeo, Medved Colorado and chairman
of the show committee of the 2008 Denver International Auto Show, believes the success of the show demonstrates pent-up demand in the automotive market.
“Even though we are in a down market in Colorado and nationally, the tremendous participation in this year’s Denver auto show is indicative of the public’s interest in new vehicles,” said Maffeo. “New and emerging technologies, along with progress toward power-source options and greater fuel efficiencies, are generating fresh interest in our new cars. Consumers are beginning to pay attention.”
Pete Tynan, president of the Metro Denver Auto Dealers Association which sponsors the Denver International Auto Show, said he had never seen such a crowd at any auto show in the past. As a Volkswagen dealer, Tynan provided staff support for the VW exhibit and personally worked the show each day.
Tynan stated, “I think each of the 500-plus cars on exhibit had its own audience and the aisles were constantly full. It seemed that the volume was three to four times that of Denver shows of the past. Many participants said this was the best show they had ever attended.”
Listed here is just some of the press coverage received for this annual event:

Clearing the air
The Denver Post, April 1
The automobile industry’s increasing efforts to remove high-emitting vehicles from the road was the inspiration behind the Denver International Auto Show’s first Green-Tie Charity Preview Event gala. This $180-a-ticket benefit for Colorado’s Clear the Air Foundation was held just before the show opened at the Colorado Convention Center. AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AT A GLANCE
Listed here are several articles pertaining to the auto industry that appeared recently in newspapers and other media outlets across the nation.
- Ritter calls for greener computing
Colorado Daily, March 24
The wonders of the Electronic Age might be tempered by increases in the demand for electricity, so Colorado's Gov. Bill Ritter has called on state entities to limit one use of the juice.
On Monday, Ritter announced that Colorado would sign on with the Climate Savers Computing Initiative (CSCI). In short, CSCI entities commit to purchasing energy-efficient computing equipment and educating employees about efficient power management strategies. Also, CSCI manufacturers commit to producing efficient equipment.

CALIFORNIA AMPS DOWN BATTERY CAR RULE -- AGAIN
Automotive News, March 28
California's clean air regulators voted last Thursday to revise – yet again – state rules that originally directed automakers to put hundreds of thousands of zero-emission vehicles on the road by 2003.
The new requirement is for 7,500 zero-emission vehicles in the period 2012-14, or about a 70 percent reduction from 2003 targets.

MISSOURI STATE SENATE PASSES BIODIESEL REQUIREMENT BILL
The Missouri Senate has passed Senate Bill 759, which requires all diesel fuel sold in Missouri to contain at least 5 percent biodiesel, or B-5.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Bill Stouffer, would enact the requirement April 1, 2010. It now goes to the House.
Biodiesel from soybeans is more environmentally friendly and better for air quality than regular diesel, according to a news release from Gov. Matt Blunt. B-5 cuts carbon dioxide and carcinogenic emissions by more than 75 percent, according to the release, and a B-5 standard in Missouri would reduce particulate matter emissions by 15.4 million pounds and carbon monoxide emissions by 168 million pounds.

GROUP1 TAX LOCATOR DATABASE GUIDANCE
Group 1 (a Pitney Bowes Company) is one of the state-certified tax jurisdiction providers for retailers in Colorado. Reminders of this and one other third party option have been provided previously. An article was included in last week’s Open Road urging dealers to ensure that these third party options are being utilized, and that proof of the information returned by these certified databases is being retained with the deal paperwork. In checking an address recently in the Group1 database for accuracy, there may be a need to highlight the specific report that should be retained.
Here is a sample lookup screen where the address and taxable amount (optional) are entered:

CLICK HERE to see a sample of the first results screen with the overall taxable amount.
On the first results screen it is important to select “Printer Friendly Report” at the bottom to view/print the detail of each tax that makes up the overall tax amount.
CLICK HERE to see a sample detail report.
